The reigning world champion Lando Norris was called to the stewards for a possible violation of the race director's instructions – he was moving too slowly on the track during qualifying. Alex Albon has a different infraction – the Williams driver breached track limits at Turn 6 during the first part of qualifying. This is why Liam Lawson, who set the 17th fastest time, remained in the car during the second session in hopes that Albon would be penalized quickly, allowing him to drop below 16th place and enabling Lawson to continue his fight.
