Even if you don't have much knowledge about car braking systems, you're probably aware that they function using hydraulic fluid. Well, that used to be the case. With the widespread adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles, drivers are relying less on hydraulic brakes. According to BMW, current EV drivers rarely engage their mechanical braking systems, relying instead on their electric motors for braking. This method is not only efficient but also reduces wear on parts, as avoiding the hydraulic system means less wear on pads and rotors.

Exciting times ahead, right? Brembo's new "Sensify" braking system advances this concept further by completely eliminating the hydraulic system and utilizing electronic brake-by-wire technology with electric motors. Brembo markets this system as a plug-and-play option that can be integrated at the platform level as part of a dedicated zonal architecture or as an addition to existing systems, possibly as part of an enhanced ADAS package.

“Developed as a scalable and flexible solution, Sensify is designed to accommodate a wide variety of advanced vehicle architectures, ranging from next-generation driver assistance systems to fully autonomous vehicles, representing a significant step in the progression of braking toward a fully software-defined future,” Brembo stated in their announcement.

Details about the system and its fail-safe mechanisms were scarce in the announcement; however, we anticipate learning more once the first production vehicles begin coming off the assembly line, likely from whichever manufacturer produces the cars.

“A leading global vehicle manufacturer has already initiated series production,” a Brembo representative informed The Drive via email. “However, we cannot disclose any specifics about the customer as the program is bound by confidentiality agreements.”

So, there’s already at least one automotive partner for this new braking system. Brembo's announcement indicates that the company is ready to collaborate with more partners. We expect to receive further updates shortly at this pace.
