Even if you're not well-versed in the workings of a car's braking system, you likely know that it relies on fluid to operate. This was the case until recently. With the widespread adoption of hybrids and electric vehicles, drivers are utilizing their hydraulic brakes less frequently. In fact, BMW reports that current electric vehicle operators rarely engage their mechanical brakes, depending instead on their electric motors to perform the task. This approach is effective and cost-efficient, as avoiding the hydraulic system also means reducing wear on the pads and rotors.
Exciting prospects lie ahead, don't you think? Brembo's new “Sensify” braking system takes innovation even further by completely removing the hydraulic system, utilizing only electronic brake-by-wire technology and electric motors. Brembo markets its system as a plug-and-play solution that can be integrated either at the platform level (as part of a specialized zonal architecture) or within an existing framework, potentially as part of an additional Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package.
“Sensify is designed as a scalable and versatile solution, crafted to accommodate various advanced vehicle architectures, ranging from next-gen driver assistance to fully autonomous systems, marking a significant step towards a software-defined future in braking,” Brembo stated in their announcement.
The announcement provided limited information about the system itself and its fail-safe mechanisms, but we anticipate further insights when the first production vehicles begin to come off the assembly line, likely from the manufacturer involved.
“The series production has already begun for a leading global vehicle manufacturer,” a Brembo representative communicated to The Drive via email. “However, we cannot disclose specifics about the customer due to confidentiality agreements.”
This indicates at least one automotive partner for the new braking system, and Brembo's announcement implies readiness for additional collaborations. We expect details to emerge soon at this pace.
