Antonelli's rise ignites new Verstappen speculation.
George Russell’s difficulties in competing against championship leader Kimi Antonelli are reigniting discussions about Formula 1’s impending silly season. After Antonelli secured pole position in Monaco, extending his championship lead to 43 points, speculation within the paddock intensified about Mercedes’ long-term strategy, including the potential involvement of Max Verstappen.
Russell acknowledged his challenges in adjusting to Mercedes’ 2026 car. "My driving style just isn’t compatible with the car at the moment," he stated after qualifying in P6. "There’s evidently a driving style disparity between us, which existed last year, but back then it worked to my advantage. Now, it's clearly working perfectly for him."
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff quickly came to Russell’s defense. "We made an error with George’s setup," he asserted. "George is exceptional. I can’t envision a better teammate. He’ll find his stride over the duration of the championship."
However, Dutch journalist Erik van Haren, who is well-connected to Verstappen’s camp, remarked that Mercedes’ internal dynamics are becoming increasingly significant. "Wolff has never concealed his fondness for Verstappen," Van Haren noted in De Telegraaf. This Dutch publication suggested that Wolff will keep an eye on whether Russell can bridge the gap to Antonelli, amid claims of performance-related clauses in Russell’s contract.
Officially, though, Wolff maintains that Antonelli’s championship status does not warrant a change in the team’s strategy and downplayed Russell’s assertion that the title is now "his to lose." "He doesn’t have much at stake," the Austrian observed. "He never anticipated being in this position, leading a championship. He relies on his instincts and just lets the car perform."
Wolff also indicated that Monaco poses particular challenges for Russell. "He hasn’t been able to build confidence behind the wheel," he noted. Nevertheless, Verstappen himself seems fully convinced of Antonelli’s promising future. When asked if the Italian has the potential to become a world champion, the Red Bull driver responded on Saturday: "Absolutely."
"You can see some drivers emerge from lower categories with something special, and when they transition up, they’re immediately fast. Kimi clearly showed that," Verstappen said. He emphasized that Mercedes’ young talent is now demonstrating his ability to translate talent into results. "This year he’s proving that when he has a competitive package, he delivers as a driver," he stated. "So that’s wonderful to see, and that’s what he needs to continue doing."
