Pirelli forecast: Teams will bet on compounds C4 and C5.
Pirelli tire manufacturers, summarizing Saturday, emphasized that qualifying in Monaco took place in ideal weather conditions – apparently, the behavior of the soft compound tires has also pleased the Italian company.
Dario Marraffusca, Pirelli Motorsport Director: “There is simply no other weekend in the season calendar where Saturday holds such significant importance. In Monaco, the position taken in qualifying often predetermines the results of the Sunday race, as overtaking on this track is very difficult.
Those drivers who showed the best results today have already gained a certain advantage – regardless of the tactics their teams will prefer.
Tire degradation on the streets of the principality is traditionally low, which allows for completing the race distance with a single pit stop to meet the mandatory requirement of using two tire compounds.
Various tactical options may involve the use of all three compounds in different combinations, but all of them are quite comparable in effectiveness. This includes strategies where the final segment of the race can be run on hard tires after starting on Soft or Medium. The pit stop can be made between laps 29 and 35 or between laps 33 and 39, respectively.
However, we believe that teams will opt for tires that provide better grip, i.e., the two softer compounds.
The active use of the C5 tire in Montreal and today in Monaco should have allowed teams to gather enough information to consider it when choosing tactics for tomorrow's race. At the start, soft tires will provide more effective grip, after which they can switch to Medium between laps 31 and 37.
But it is important to remember that with so many tactical options, it is crucial to keep in mind that the timing of the pit stop can be seriously affected by the appearance of red flags and race neutralization. It is enough to recall what happened two years ago when an accident on the first lap forced everyone to return to the pits immediately, and for most participants in that Monaco Grand Prix, that was the only pit stop.”
