"Everyone was aware that it would result in losses."

The management of the former French Grand Prix is facing increased scrutiny following a regional audit that highlighted what it deemed "flawed" management of the event. A report from France’s Regional Chamber of Accounts reviewed the public interest group responsible for organizing the Formula 1 race at Paul Ricard from 2018 until its removal from the calendar in 2023. The report determined that 103 million euros in public funds were spent to host four grands prix, while questioning whether the claimed economic benefits were exaggerated. "Everyone knew that it would be loss-making and would require public funds," stated Xavier Lefort, the chamber's president. He further noted that "the economic benefits have been significantly overinflated," with the report estimating them at 75 million euros, as opposed to earlier projections of 120 million. The auditors also pointed out what they called "irregular procedures" in the awarding of several contracts, excessive executive pay, and failures in governance. This report follows an ongoing judicial investigation that began in 2023 concerning alleged favoritism and misuse of public funds related to the organization of the French GP.
