"In Formula 1, it’s overly complicated."

Former Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has criticized the way Formula 1 managed the Monaco pit lane speeding issue while reiterating his support for the reintroduction of V8 engines. Speaking before Red Bull's home race in Austria, and making his first appearance since his retirement, Marko remarked that the aftermath of the Monaco GP, where Pierre Gasly successfully appealed a pit lane speeding penalty due to timing errors, revealed flaws in the sport’s governance.

"The collaboration between Liberty and the FIA needs to be closer and better coordinated," Marko stated to Kleine Zeitung. "The absurdity of the penalties in Monaco, for instance, reflects a poor system." The FIA later admitted to mistakes in the pit lane timing, which affected several drivers, although Alpine's successful appeal only reinstated Gasly's podium position. Mercedes initially considered appealing George Russell’s penalty but eventually decided against it.

Marko feels that Formula 1 has become needlessly complex. "In football, the goal size is always the same, and the rules are straightforward and clear," he noted. "In Formula 1, it’s too complicated."

The 83-year-old embraced the recent move to adjust the 2027-28 engine regulations while discussions about potentially returning to V8 engines continue. "Definitely!" Marko responded when asked about V8 engines. "That would refocus racing on its original essence, rather than the current situation where energy management is crucial during qualifying.

"Every corner should be taken at or beyond the limit—that’s what makes it thrilling and sets it apart." Marko, who left Red Bull at the end of 2025, defended the Austrian GP's significance, even while recognizing it is not profitable. "Formula 1 continues to operate as usual; there's no need for concern," said the Austrian, who now serves as an ambassador for the Red Bull-hosted event. "It's still a loss-making venture, but it enhances the image of the region and the entire country tremendously. Only an event like this can generate such publicity worldwide."

He also condemned the local opposition to the Red Bull Ring. "It’s this selfish and petty attitude that leads people to complain about certain restrictions once or twice a year, without recognizing the benefits it brings to the region," Marko remarked. "It’s especially baffling to me that some who built their homes near the Ring, when it was already established, are now up in arms."
