Carlos Sainz: Patience doesn't run out, but I am worried.
On the track in Silverstone, Carlos Sainz finished 12th, but then the stewards of the British Grand Prix issued him a rather specific penalty, after which the Williams driver ended up five places lower in the final standings.
Of course, Carlos is upset, as he did everything within his power behind the wheel of the far from fastest FW48 car. Although the team prepared an upgraded front wing for the home stage of the season, it had little impact on race pace, and more extensive updates are planned for later stages of the season.
"My patience is not running out, but I am frustrated and worried," he shared while speaking with the Spanish press. "During the race, I tried to defend my position, I had to constantly check the rearview mirrors, and the battery was barely able to handle such loads. But it’s disappointing that the competitors still end up ahead of you.
At least my start was good; it was the best of the season or one of the best. I gained quite a few positions, overtaking all those cars that we can probably hold back if we manage to get ahead of them. But the harsh reality is that we still couldn't maintain a good position (Sainz was running 10th in the first four laps).
During the Grand Prix, we lacked pace, and that is a worrying point, as we hoped to make a big step forward this weekend, but that didn’t happen. Now we need to figure out why our expectations were not met. Honestly, I am really worried. I have realized for the first time that the car is not getting faster, and compared to our competitors, we are not progressing.
Although the weight of the chassis is getting closer to normal, the gap continues to grow. There are no improvements in aerodynamics, and that is starting to concern me. After this Grand Prix, I plan to work at the base in Grove, where I will spend time on the simulator and talk with the team to collectively work towards correcting the situation, although it is clear that it is tough."
In conclusion, it is worth mentioning the comment from James Vowles, who said after the finish of yesterday's race: "Improvements take time, but I am confident that we will return to a higher level. We continue to work hard, we are determined, and we will be able to increase the speed of the car."
