BYD acknowledges that it 'could potentially be interested' in an F1 project.
However, "there is no immediate project in mind."
Chinese automotive giant BYD has addressed the increasing speculation connecting the company to Formula 1. The manufacturer has recently been associated with the idea of becoming the sport’s twelfth team, with former Red Bull leader Christian Horner among those rumored to be involved if the project proceeds. Nevertheless, during discussions with media outlets, including Soy Motor, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, BYD executives maintained that no Formula 1 initiative is currently in place. "No, no, there is no project," stated executive vice president Stella Li. "I mentioned that there is no immediate project in mind. The dream is always present, but we lack a concrete plan."
Special advisor Alfredo Altavilla added that BYD would only contemplate entering Formula 1 if it aligned with the company’s technological goals. "We only consider Formula 1 to the extent that our technology can contribute to its aims," he remarked. "We will never engage in Formula 1 merely to place a sticker on a car. There are more effective ways to allocate that funding." Altavilla also noted that the company’s stance might evolve based on the future direction of Formula 1’s engine regulations. "If we can identify a way to become technology partners with Formula 1, we might express interest. Then we need to find a solution, but that's a prerequisite. So let’s wait to see how these new regulations unfold." These statements come as the FIA moves towards a simpler engine framework for post-2030, focusing on V8 power with a reduced hybrid element, although the final regulations are yet to be confirmed.
