Mitsubishi is set to make its comeback in America’s truck market with assistance from its corporate partner, Nissan. In the coming years, Mitsubishi plans to introduce a pickup that is likely to be based on the Frontier, marking its return to a segment it exited more than 15 years ago with the discontinuation of the Dakota-based Raider.

There have been ongoing rumors regarding a new Nissan-based Mitsubishi pickup for years. At one point, it was speculated that the resulting vehicle might resemble the unibody Ford Maverick rather than the midsize, body-on-frame Frontier. However, given Nissan’s current financial status and the insights we have, it seems more logical for the two companies to develop a new model based on an existing U.S.-manufactured platform, which leads us back to the Frontier, eagerly calling out, “Ooooh, pick me!”

Mitsubishi has confirmed the truck’s introduction as part of its "Momentum 2030" initiative, which includes other models previously announced, such as a Leaf-based Eclipse EV.

“As part of this strategy, Mitsubishi Motors aims to re-enter the pickup truck market in North America through its collaboration with Nissan, which will enhance the brand’s footprint and significance in the U.S.,” stated the company’s announcement.

“When we introduced Momentum 2030, many were skeptical about whether such an ambitious vision could be realized. Today, that vision is beginning to take form,” said Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. “Mitsubishi Motors is fully committed, and the direction for the U.S. market is becoming clear. This represents the most comprehensive growth strategy we have ever pursued in the region, focused on providing greater value to customers, creating new opportunities for our dealer partners, and ensuring the brand's long-term viability.”

Mitsubishi has also confirmed that more details regarding the reintroduced Montero (known as Pajero in other markets) will be revealed soon—very soon, in fact. The global unveiling is scheduled for next Wednesday, Sept. 2, although the U.S. version may take a few years to arrive.

This is an encouraging development for those looking for an affordable pickup truck. How about some exciting cars next?
