So far, iRacing has mainly served as a multiplayer racing platform. Although the simulator has included AI opponents and allowed for solo hot laps, the focus has never been on the single-player experience. However, this is set to change with the introduction of a career mode. This development has been in the works for a while—iRacing notes that it still requires “a little more time in the oven”—and minimal details were shared until today.
The August development update from iRacing is extensive, covering everything coming up for the simulator, from the impending launch of the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH and Caterhams, to track updates, performance improvements, and user interface enhancements. Although all of this is valuable, our primary focus is the career mode.
As explained by the team, this mode revolves around “racing, learning, advancement, objectives, leaderboards, realistic progression paths, and an exceptional amount of included content.”
This last point is particularly encouraging, considering that one of the main criticisms of iRacing since its launch has been the monthly or annual fee for the service—which costs $14.75 per month for existing users and $124.50 for the yearly membership—along with the requirement to purchase every additional car and track separately, beyond a limited selection of base content. However, for career mode, “no additional car or track purchases [are] required,” and “access [to all content] is exclusive to this mode and does not transfer to the wider iRacing service.”
A screenshot of the career interface reveals a pre-season testing option, allowing players to try a car before committing to an entire season.
It’s a promising start. Moreover, the experience promises to be vast, featuring seven unique careers (with more to be introduced in the future), which the developer describes as “a full game’s worth of content.” These careers will cover various disciplines and levels within the motorsport hierarchy, meaning whether you're interested in sports cars or oval racing, there won’t be a single pathway to achieve success in your chosen category.
The difficulty level is adjustable, and progression up the ranks will depend on meeting specific objectives rather than merely winning races, mirroring real-world racing dynamics. However, since this is iRacing, there will be repercussions for failing repeatedly, including the possibility of having to start over if you stumble too many times. This makes sense, as the platform is not known for being lenient. It’s quite surprising that race lengths will even be adjustable to some degree.
iRacing also mentions that when this feature eventually launches, it won’t be fully complete from day one. More complex elements, such as budget and team management, will not be available initially. While these features would be welcome, simply providing the framework for career progression marks a significant advancement, especially by offering players all the necessary content from the start.
In addition to the career mode, there will soon be two (technically three) new cars on the service. Both Caterhams—the Academy and 420R—are being sold for the price of one.
Regarding the timeline, iRacing’s Greg Hill stated in Friday’s blog that “We were so close to making this post an official release announcement rather than another progress update.” Although no specific launch date was provided, this statement suggests that the release may be imminent, making fall a reasonable estimate. After recently setting up my sim rig again following a long break from racing, I’ll be prepared.
