Schumacher's Cadillac downfall creates uncertainty about the future.

McLaren’s WEC project for 2027 may be Schumacher’s best opportunity.

Mick Schumacher’s anticipated future with Cadillac has diminished, placing his motorsport career at another pivotal moment. The former Haas driver, who transitioned from Formula 1 to Alpine’s World Endurance Championship team, was slated to join Cadillac’s WEC program and serve as a reserve driver for its F1 entry in 2026. However, as reported by Auto Motor und Sport and Motorsport Aktuell, Schumacher has unexpectedly withdrawn from the agreement.

"Did Mick Schumacher take too great a risk?" questioned the former German source. Sources indicate that the son of F1 icon Michael Schumacher was dissatisfied with Cadillac’s proposal, favoring the benefits he received at Alpine, such as additional tire allocations and guaranteed qualifying opportunities. Cadillac’s Jota-run program treats all drivers equally, including former stars like Jenson Button. Meanwhile, Alpine has already appointed Antonio Felix da Costa as Schumacher’s replacement, leaving him without a secured seat. According to Auto Bild, Schumacher will compete for Alpine this weekend in Austin before engaging in further discussions.

The German driver is also not in the running for a 2026 Alpine F1 seat, with Flavio Briatore excluding him from consideration alongside Pierre Gasly. This situation may render McLaren’s 2027 WEC initiative as Schumacher’s most viable option, though it would require him to sit out a season first.
