Brown explains Lambiase's position, minimizes Verstappen connection.
"Andrea currently holds three roles in one."
Zak Brown has provided clarification regarding Gianpiero Lambiase's future position at McLaren, amidst rumors about him potentially taking over as team principal from Andrea Stella. Brown confirmed that Max Verstappen's long-time race engineer is expected to assume a significant leadership position, probably sooner than the previously mentioned 2028 timeline.
"He (Lambiase) and I are unsure if Andrea has mentioned this already, but he will take on the race aspect," he stated. "Andrea really has three roles combined at the moment. While we often refer to it as two, he serves as the team boss, leads the racing team, and also has a significant role akin to that of a technical director."
Brown emphasized that Stella will continue to be a key part of the organization. "Andrea is essentially the glue that keeps everything together," he remarked. "I believe his responsibilities as team principal have expanded significantly in recent years."
However, he acknowledged that the demands have become too overwhelming for one person. "I believe Andrea is quite capable of managing two tasks, but assigning him three may be too much. That's why GP is coming in and will play an important role with us."
Brown also reiterated his disapproval of increasing connections between teams, in light of rumors regarding Mercedes' interest in Alpine. "This applies to anyone and everyone, A-B teams, co-ownership," he commented. "Regardless of who it is, I disapprove. I don’t think it’s beneficial for the sport."
Interestingly, he supported the possible return of former rival Christian Horner, despite their past conflicts. "He's an excellent operator; his record speaks for itself," Brown expressed. "I think it would be fantastic to have him back in the sport. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t return, whether it's with Alpine or another team."
With Lambiase's arrival spurring speculation regarding Max Verstappen, Brown downplayed the chances of the Dutch driver also joining McLaren. "If I had to wager, I’d say Max would likely move to Mercedes," he concluded.
