Vettel supports drivers as demands increase for additional rule modifications.
"There will likely be additional adjustments"
Sebastian Vettel has expressed his support for the current drivers in voicing concerns regarding Formula 1’s new regulations, cautioning that the sport must maintain its essential identity. "For the sake of the sport, I hope these changes lead to greater satisfaction among the drivers, as they ultimately represent the sport," the retired four-time world champion remarked to SVT. "When they exit the car, filled with adrenaline and excitement, that energy resonates with the audience."
Now 38 years old and preparing for the London marathon this weekend, Vettel conveyed his understanding of the increasing worries related to the racing experience and acknowledged why F1 has responded with regulatory adjustments that will be implemented starting in Miami next weekend. "From a competitive standpoint, I hear and echo the concerns expressed by many drivers, as the cars may be enjoyable to drive, but racing with them may not be as entertaining," he stated. "I empathize with the drivers, and it is crucial not to lose the essence and DNA of the sport."
Nonetheless, the German, who is a strong advocate for environmental issues, recognized the benefits of this new phase. "There are positives, including the sustainability of the fuel and the potential it has for the future," Vettel stated. "It was high time to introduce that kind of fuel."
Current drivers also anticipate additional modifications. Carlos Sainz, a director of the GPDA, noted that these recent adjustments might not be the final ones. "With such a significant change in regulations, it was clear that everything wouldn’t be perfect right away," he told DAZN. "There will likely be other things we need to adjust in the future, but I am glad that progress is being made."
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella concurred that the process is ongoing. "If we, as the F1 community, remain open to change, we should learn from the outcomes," he commented. "This way, we can be receptive to fine-tuning elements and also consider even more substantial changes in the future."
