Ferrari's 'Macarena' wing expands while competitors introduce upgrades in Miami.
Red Bull has now adopted a similar approach.
Ferrari's innovative ’Macarena’ rear wing concept is starting to make its way through the Formula 1 grid, with Red Bull now testing this eye-catching design. Giusto Ferronato from La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Ferrari continued to develop the unique wing during a filming day at Monza this week. He mentioned, "New work has been done on the Macarena wing, which remains in the testing phase and is expected to be structurally introduced in the upcoming races." This device, a 270-degree rotating active rear wing concept in line with the 2026 regulations, was initially tested by Ferrari in practice earlier this season and is now anticipated to be fully launched in Miami. Importantly, Red Bull has now followed this trend. An updated RB22, driven by Max Verstappen, participated in a session at Silverstone on April 22, seemingly featuring a version of the same concept along with broader aerodynamic revisions, including updated sidepods and a modified front wing. Reports indicate that this package could yield a straight-line speed increase of "5 to 10 kph." Ferronato also noted that Ferrari utilized the Monza test to examine "energy management, a vital aspect" before the regulatory changes expected in Miami. Meanwhile, McLaren is preparing a significant update as well. Team principal Andrea Stella referred to the new package as essentially a "completely new car." "We’re very determined to re-enter the competition," he told Sky Italia. "We don't impose any limits—perhaps another 2024 is possible."
