'No one comprehends' the 2026 rules or adjustments - Perez
"Formula 1 has undoubtedly changed a lot"
Confusion regarding the 2026 regulations in Formula 1 – along with the latest adjustments for Miami – continues to grow, with both drivers and analysts admitting they also find it challenging to grasp the system. This week, the FIA presented a number of modifications to energy management, which include reducing the maximum recharge from 8MJ to 7MJ and raising the peak "superclip" power to 350kW. However, former driver Christian Klien remarked that the increasing complexity is becoming problematic. "When you go through this – particularly in the FIA’s English – it’s evident that no fan can comprehend it anymore," he shared with Servus TV.
Sergio Perez from Cadillac, who made his return to the grid this year after a season away, concurred. "This Formula 1 is certainly very different, and the truth is that no one understands it, neither the engineers nor us drivers," he stated in Mexico City, as reported by EFE. "It’s a reality that the cars aren't as enjoyable as they once were. There comes a moment when you're driving 80 or 90 kilometers per hour faster than the car ahead, and you don’t know why." Even Oscar Piastri confessed: "I still require someone smarter than me to explain it."
Klien warned that the sport risks becoming overly complicated. "It’s all a bit vague," he noted. "One must be cautious not to make it overly complex for viewers." Nevertheless, not everyone shares these concerns. George Russell believes the criticism is exaggerated. "I certainly do not agree with that at all. Personally, I’m really enjoying the car," he remarked. "These are intricate details, and to be honest, fans don’t really need to grasp them." Russell also mentioned that the adjustments in Miami should enhance the situation. "From this race onward, we’ll be at full throttle on the straights during a qualifying lap, and we won’t need to ease off to manage any energy." The FIA has also lengthened the first practice in Miami to 90 minutes to assist teams in adjusting to the updated regulations.
