In Formula 1, further changes to the regulations are being discussed.

In Formula 1, discussions have already begun regarding further measures to adjust the technical regulations aimed at the 2027-2028 seasons, writes The Race.

The amendments that were quickly agreed upon before the Miami Grand Prix are just the beginning of a more serious revision of the rules, the necessity of which seems to be understood by all.

An anonymous high-ranking source cited by the British publication acknowledged that these initial adjustments are aimed at addressing a maximum of 20% of the issues that need to be resolved. Therefore, the organizers of the World Championship and the manufacturers of power units are already discussing the next set of measures, which involve making changes to the design of internal combustion engines as well as energy storage systems. This could happen as early as 2027.

The engines themselves and the existing batteries are quite capable of generating enough energy to allow drivers to attack at full strength throughout the lap. However, under the current 50/50 power ratio between the engine and the battery, this is impossible. Therefore, there are increasing calls to enhance the efficiency of the internal combustion engine by increasing the specific fuel consumption.

The FIA and power unit manufacturers are already calculating the measures that will allow for a positive change in the situation, particularly regarding a possible increase in engine power by 50 kW, while the battery power could be reduced by 50-100 kW accordingly. That is, the power ratio between the internal combustion engine and the electric part of the power unit will shift from the current 50/50 to approximately 60/40.

It is technically impossible to increase engine power in 2026 without compromising their reliability, but implementing the discussed measures for the next season or the 2028 championship is quite feasible.

"We need to consider significant measures to change the design of the engines," confirmed Andrea Stella, head of the McLaren team. "But this is a long-term task so that we can use a working range of the power unit that does not force us to make serious compromises in terms of chassis work or driving.

We believe this is possible, and we think all stakeholders should approach this discussion with the intention of achieving improvements."

Laurent Mekies, head of Red Bull Racing, supports him: "We agree with Andrea that the next step is to make changes to the engine design. The changes that will come into effect in Miami are already a good step forward. No one is saying that these measures will solve all the problems, but we support further steps that need to be taken in the future so that drivers can attack at full strength."

According to The Race, if everyone agrees to change the 50/50 ratio by 2027, this decision needs to be made and passed through all levels of approval in the coming weeks so that power unit manufacturers can begin developing new engineering solutions.
