McLaren's performance this season is far from ideal; after six races, the championship team is in 3rd place in the Constructors' Cup, with more than twice as few points as Mercedes, the championship leader.

The inconsistent results of McLaren's drivers are often linked to technical issues, but when the MCL40 is functioning properly, it allows Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to contend for spots in the top three.

The Australian has reached the podium twice, in Japan and Miami, and at the previous race in Monaco, he finished 4th. Today, he was, of course, asked about his expectations for the upcoming Barcelona-Catalonia Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri: "This season, decent performances have alternated with failures, that’s for sure. In Monaco last weekend, we had a tough time, although I still managed to show a somewhat decent result. However, we must admit that we were not fast enough to compete even for the position we finished in.

I hope we can perform better here – by the way, even in Canada, things were not going too badly until Sunday. I also hope we gained some useful information about how our car handles certain types of corners and how it performs under various conditions. I believe this somewhat depends on the specifics of the particular track, but how it will be in Barcelona will be revealed throughout the weekend.

In any case, the plus is that we will have the opportunity to test the MCL40 on a track that can be considered more normal (compared to Monaco).

It is likely that our results are equally affected by the fact that the car is generally not efficient enough and that it is not reliable enough. When technical failures occur, lost points can somehow be recovered, but when reliability is lacking, there’s no way to make up for that.

Undoubtedly, both of these problems are costly for us, but given the current state of affairs, theoretically, we could be achieving slightly higher results; however, we still wouldn’t be fighting for race wins. It is clear that the car's speed needs to be improved, although it is understood that when and if we manage to do that, we must first and foremost finish the race. Still, right now we are focusing more on the efficiency of the chassis."
