Report: Mateschitz is becoming frustrated with Verstappen.
Recent reports from the Netherlands indicate that the tensions between Max Verstappen and Red Bull are intensifying, as both parties become increasingly frustrated with the ongoing uncertainty regarding the Dutch driver's future.
The relationship has soured due to Red Bull's disappointing 2026 performance, with Verstappen expressing his anger after the Silverstone race over issues related to performance, reliability, and the team's disregard for his preferred race strategy leading up to the British GP.
De Limburger reports that Verstappen has the option to activate an exit clause following the Hungarian GP, and he might postpone making a final decision until October. The publication states that Red Bull’s shareholders, including Mark Mateschitz, are growing frustrated with Verstappen's reluctance to commit to his future, interpreting this as a sign of disloyalty.
Conversely, those close to the four-time world champion believe that Verstappen's concerns are not being heard by the team, particularly highlighted by Red Bull’s choice not to install a new power unit, which would have required starting from the pitlane at Silverstone, despite Verstappen’s requests.
De Telegraaf journalist Erik van Haren mentions that the rising uncertainty is resulting in increased tension on both sides.
"The Red Bull side is very much seeking an answer from Verstappen," he stated on the newspaper’s podcast. "I wouldn’t say they’re begging, but they have been eager to find out if he will remain with Red Bull for the next season for quite some time."
Van Haren notes that Verstappen is not in a hurry to provide that answer. "Verstappen is saying, 'No, I’m not in a hurry, I’m not ready to say anything yet.' Naturally, that also leads to some frustration."
He believes that Red Bull still has reasons to be hopeful, including improvements to their Ford-backed power unit and a new wind tunnel set to open next year. "Red Bull views the situation quite positively," Van Haren mentioned. "Verstappen, on the other hand, is assessing things from a different perspective and is not as optimistic."
The journalist added that the core issue is no longer merely performance, but rather trust. "The only scenario in which Verstappen would consider leaving Red Bull is if there were a breach of trust or if he felt he had insufficient faith in the current team members. I'm not sure if that's the case."
Van Haren also observed that while McLaren is still considered a potential destination for Verstappen, their recent performance has declined, making any move a matter of balancing significant benefits against possible disadvantages.
Additionally, it is understood that Oscar Piastri has an exit clause that could come into play around the summer break, particularly given his current P6 standing in the championship.
