Russell wants to help make Formula 1 safer.

      George Russell not only drives for the Mercedes team but has also been serving as the director of the GPDA association since 2021, a kind of union for Formula 1 drivers, striving to do everything possible in this position to enhance racing safety.

      According to him, he is motivated by two dramatic incidents he witnessed: the crash of Billy Monger in the British Formula 4 race in 2017 and the tragic incident that occurred two years later in Spa, which took the life of French F2 driver Antoine Hubert.

      Billy Monger survived but lost both legs, and despite this, he returned to motorsport and even took up the profession of a commentator – this weekend he is working with the team covering the London Formula E final.

      Russell is convinced that there is still much to be done in motorsport to improve safety standards, and he does not pay attention to those who might think he is trying to engage in politics.

      "Yes, that's an interesting point of view, and it's quite amusing to hear it," he shared in an interview with RacingNews365. "I believe that Formula 1 is constantly evolving, and all drivers genuinely want to make our sport better. Especially when the season unfolds as it has this year, with many changes, and we need to understand how to act to ensure development continues in the right direction.

      Ultimately, someone needs to gather all opinions and present them to the right people. You see, for me, this is largely connected to the two events. I witnessed the crashes of Billy Monger and Antoine Hubert, and it was horrific to see, and since I am a driver, I have my own unique perspective: I see things that are not visible to the rule-makers, constructors, or engineers. Simply because the cars are driven by the drivers.

      And there are areas where attention can help save lives, make our sport a little safer, or avoid unnecessary risks. Formula 1 will always remain a dangerous sport, and we should never try to completely eradicate that because risk is also part of the game. But if excessive risk can be avoided to some extent, then I want to voice my opinion and participate in the process of these changes."
