FIA suggests Audi and Honda are not in favor of the V10 comeback concept.

"The regulations for 2026 are finalized."

The FIA acknowledges that discussions are ongoing regarding the possible return of V10 engines in Formula 1. Recently, amid growing speculation that the new and controversial 2026 engine regulations might be abandoned in favor of naturally aspirated V10 engines powered by sustainable fuel for 2028, Audi released a statement. Although somewhat ambiguous, the statement clearly indicated that the Volkswagen-owned manufacturer chose to acquire Sauber primarily due to the highly electrified 2026 regulations. Team driver Nico Hulkenberg also stated in Shanghai, "The regulations for 2026 are finalized."

In light of the uncertainty, Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA’s single-seater chief, revealed that "initial discussions" are occurring, but he stressed that there is "no urgency." "We are proud to have brought Audi into this sport and we want to ensure they maintain their commitment," he added. "We are pleased to have persuaded Honda to reconsider their exit and return, but we are now seeking a compromise that accommodates everyone, considering the current circumstances. There is no blanket solution; we aim to find a middle ground."

Some individuals worry that the racing quality could suffer if the 2026 regulations are implemented as planned, while others highlight the significant costs associated with further enhancing the hybrid era. "In 2020-2021, when the regulations were under discussion, the shift towards electric propulsion was evident," Tombazis noted. "Since then, participants' perspectives have evolved, and even though Formula 1 is currently in a strong financial position, it is crucial for us to shield it from further global economic fluctuations. However, we are not looking to make unilateral decisions; instead, we wish to consider the interests of all stakeholders."
